MERC Captains (Also known as Foremen in some cutscenes) are an enemy introduced in MADNESS: Project Nexus and one of the seven MERC units introduced in this game. They are the highest rank among the MERC's combat units.

They are first introduced in Story Mode's industrial sector stage The Station Fortress and appear as mini-bosses in Arena Mode's battle stage The Foundry.

Appearance

MERC Captains wear the standard MERC Uniform underneath a MERC MkII vest and dual pauldrons. They also wear a pair of black boots, full dark grey gloves, an officer cap, aviators and are seen smoking cigar at all times.

Personality

MERC Captains exhibit a very strict personality, as one of them is shown scolding a Gunner in a flashback for not preparing the shipment properly before departure. One of them shows irritation at seeing Sanford and Deimos trespassing their territory in The Station Fortress, showcasing that they care a lot about what little they have left in the city's rotting Industrial Sector.

Abilities

Captains are the best at combat among the rest of MERC's units, and they are mostly wielding NEX410 shotgun-revolvers. They also possess three corpus blocks and a Journeyman-level TAC-Bar akin to the AAHW or the Nexus Core's Soldats, making them a tough opponent to face.

They are often accompanied by lesser MERC units such as Zerkers or Gunners and their deadly shooting skills make them a priority if the player is out of TAC-Bar as their NEX410 can quickly break a corpus block.

They are one of few enemies who gain invincibility frames after one of their corpus blocks is broken, rendering them invulnerable to damage for a short period of time.

Trivia

  • In MADNESS: Project Nexus' concept art, the Sergeant and the Captain's names were swapped. They also did not wear caps and had a lip similar to Sanford's.
  • Prior to being given dialogue in an update where one of them confronts Sanford and Deimos in The Station Fortress, the MERC Captain was the only MERC unit in the game's Story Mode to have no characterization or lines of dialogue outside of combat chatter.
  • In one of Story Mode's flashbacks, it is shown that prior to the fall of Nexus City, MERC Captains fulfilled the role of foremen, overseeing MERC's matter exporting operations and delivery schedules.
  • Both Captain and Sergeant use the "Soldier" voice set.
